Reminds me of Oyster cards.

Now what fun could we have here....

Maybe worth buying a cheap used figure and smash it apart, find the RFID chip and pull it out.

Used the old models as display models and create mini coins representing the figures and a mini base, perhaps you could attach to your belt.

A portable, wearable version.

Actually... DI has a 3DS starter kit, is it the same as consoles? Does it "anchor" you? Could make a new 3DS kit, Lola.

I wonder if you could stack characters...

This may be a silly question... but does anyone think it's possible to use characters if we leave them in the packaging?

You won't be able to use characters in the packaging as they will not be able to sit on the base to be read.

More thank likely you will, it uses RFID technology, same as Skylanders, Oyster cards, and various "contactless payment" systems.
It doesn't require direct contact to function, however the exact range it will work could be crippled, which you'd expect to be a very small radius emanating from the base.

You might have some trouble, say with playset packs and multiple character packs together, alternatively, you could buy another starter pack, hack the base apart, extract the components without damaging them as pictured in the OP, and you could get these closer to the packaging to read the correct figure inside.

my personal opinion is that these are toys and they are to be played with, not kept in the packaging.

even if you can do so it is totally stupid to play through packaging. it is the same as eating and ingesting food without taking the wrapping off.
