Well, aside from the porting issues with how borderline-unplayably slow it ran, 3.0 has been a point of contention with its free-to-play system, which I heard caused a huge amount of controversy when the PC version first launched. That tainted its reputation by the looks of it (people are still giving bad reviews about it (and the gameplay issues) on Steam), so I guess the developers just decided to can it.
On the bright side though, with how they worded it, maybe they're working on the issues and will release a much better and more satisfying version if the game at a later date. Or I could just be being optimistic, but hey, it's a thought.
