How to wreck a Wreck-it-Ralph display case

Postby Leonabi76 » Mon Dec 30, 2013 5:49 pm

So, those whom have purchased the PDP Display Cases to protect their figures may have come upon a problem. In particular, I've attached pics of the offending product by PDP concerning the Wreck-it-Ralph figure (Davy Jones' top also touches the top of the case, but alas still closes).

Here, the right fist is clearly an obstruction.
Image
This causes the clear lid to not line up well at all.
Image
Wreck-it-Ralph is also just a tad too tall. Just a couple of millimeters, but enough to cause more of a problem than Davy Jones.

I have made what I think is an appropriate mod to help remedy this issue. The following is a work log of said mod. Let me know how you've solved this issue.

I started by masking out the areas where WiR touches the display case. Then I drew in some classic glass breaks I thought were appropriate. First with a pencil, then with a sharpie once I thought the design was just right.
**NOTE: Don't try drawing straight on the plastic. The masking serves a dual purpose. First, to get the design just like you want it at the correct size and second, to facilitate the plastic cutting (helps prevent cracking of plastic and keep debris to a minimum).
Image
Grabbed my trusty dremel and I took to the masked area on top first.
Image
Being that the cutting disc was 1" it was a tad hard to get in the smaller cuts, but I managed with a steady hand. The plastic was a lot thicker than I anticipated.
Image
After I finally cut through, I cleaned the cuts up with an X-acto knife.
Image
After doing so, I used a sharpie to highlight the break. It stood out way better and had a cleaner look.

I did the second break a little different.

Just so you know, this past weekend (12.26-12.28) the PDP display cases were on sale for $7.99 at Best Buy so I cleared out the whole of two local stores! That stated, I wasn't worried about experimenting with one case.

I started the second break a little different. I drilled pilot holes at every point. This helped out a huge deal. Do it this way!
Image
The cuts felt a lot cleaner and were completed in faster fashion.
Image
This is after again cleaning the cuts with the X-acto knife, coloring the lines with a sharpie permanent marker and finally cleaning the case of plastic dust and debris.

The finished result:

Be careful when placing the lid over the WiR figure. If the corners of the breaks touch the hand while the Sharpie color is still "wet," you may put black dots on him that are really hard to clean off. Ask me how i know!
Not too, too bad for my first try at a DI project :?:
Good luck and let me know how y'all's turn out.

That's interesting how the glass didn't have any extra cracks on it once you start drilling the holes and cutting the glass off

The use of the painters tape and masking off of the area to be cut is what helps with preventing cracks.

I was with you up until you busted out the dremel... that's way above my paygrade. Xacto and prayer is my modification limit. You are much cooler than DI though... I think when Jack Skellington didn't fit inside the Gamestop special edition case he was supposed to come with they just changed Jack Skellilngton's pose a bit so he would barely fit. Your way is much cooler. 8-)
