Single player, two char. on base station?

Can you have two characters on the base station, even when you're only playing single player. Say, your two favorite characters so they are both easily accessible?

I am pretty sure the second area on the base station is only for a second controller/player. I don't remember seeing it, but I imagine that when the second character is placed on the base that it automatically goes to split screen.
