'Frozen' Soundtrack Flying Towards 12th Week at No. 1 on Billboard 200
If "Frozen" spends a 12th week at No. 1, it will tie Alanis Morissette's "Jagged Little Pill" and Santana's "Supernatural" for the sixth-longest run at No. 1

The "Frozen" soundtrack will likely continue its lengthy run at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart next week. According to industry sources, the album could sell around 100,000 copies in the week ending April 27, which should secure its 12th week at No. 1.

A week ago, it sold 259,000 in the week ending April 20 -- securing its 11th week at No. 1.

Next week, "Frozen" should be a sizable distance ahead of the likely No. 2 album, Iggy Azalea's "The New Classic," which may debut with 50,000 to 55,000. That set is currently supported by the hit single "Fancy" (featuring Charli XCX), which rises 37-18 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The new top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart will be revealed on April 30.

On SoundScan's Building chart (below), "Frozen" is No. 1, followed by Azalea, Future and Neon Trees at Nos. 2-4, respectively. The Building tally is a precursor to the final Billboard 200 ranking, reflecting the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week as reported by six major merchants.

Box Office: ‘Frozen’ Crosses $400 Million Domestic Mark

“Frozen” has reached yet another milestone.

The Disney toon crossed the $400 million mark at the domestic box office on Friday in its 23rd week.

Having hauled $1.1 billion worldwide, the princess tale recently became the highest-grossing animated pic of all time. It’s also the sixth top earning film, close behind “Iron Man 3′s” $1.2 million. “Avatar” holds the number one spot with $2.8 million.

“Frozen” is lower down on the domestic leader list at 19. It’s the sixth Disney movie to pass $400 million domestically, following “Marvel’s The Avengers” ($623 million), “Iron Man 3” ($409 million), “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” ($423 million), “The Lion King” ($423 million) and “Toy Story 3” ($415 million).

Not counting re-releases, “Frozen” is only the 15th movie to hit $400 million Stateside. Not even “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2” achieved that feat. Thanks to its reissue, “Star Wars” became the first film to cross $400 million in 1997.

“Frozen” also stayed firmly locked in the domestic top ten for 17 weeks. It opened to $93 million over Thanksgiving weekend.

The movie is still playing in 227 theaters and made $39,000 on Friday.

Idina Menzel Would "Absolutely" Play Elsa in Broadway's Frozen

Image

Idina Menzel, the mighty voice of Elsa in Disney’s Frozen, wants to play her part on Broadway too, she told Cosmopolitan.com earlier today at Variety’s Power of Women luncheon. “Yes! Sure! Absolutely!” she said.

Disney is in the very early stages of bringing the movie — now the highest-grossing animated film of all time — to the stage, so casting is presumably a ways off. But it only makes sense that Menzel, a Broadway star, reprise her role. (She’s currently starring in the musical If/Then and she won a Tony for originating the role of Elphaba in Wicked.) Also, a reminder to the people in charge: Kristen Bell would like to play her character, Anna, in the Broadway adaptation as well.

It's safe to say that tickets to the musical would be in high demand, seeing as there are already crazy parents who’ve spent hundreds of dollars on eBay to get their (spoiled) kids hard-to-find Frozen merchandize. And Mendel is flattered by it all. “It is a huge compliment," she said. "It was such a dream of mine to be in the Disney family and become an animated queen.” But may she suggest a more affordable workaround to getting an Elsa dress for a kid? “What about when people used to, like, sew a little skirt together and make their own stuff?”

Of course, Frozen swag is probably not hard for her to come by. But whatever pull she has is of little use to her 4-year-old son. “We’re supposed to go to a Frozen event, and I thought he would want to dress up as something from the movie," she said. "And, I asked him, 'Who?' He said he wanted to dress up like the Michael Jackson zombie from Thriller.” That kid sounds great.

Disney’s ‘Frozen’ Leads Sales of Licensed Toys

The love fest between little girls and the film “Frozen” helped Walt Disney Co. (DIS) maintain its domination of the U.S. licensed toy industry last quarter.

Elsa dolls and other “Frozen” merchandise sold better than any other licensed toys in the first three months of the year, according to NPD Group Inc. The animated movie, released in November, has generated more than $1.1 billion in ticket sales, according to Box Office Mojo. That’s made it the highest-grossing animated film of all time.

For Disney, the “Frozen” surge is helping continue its winning streak in toy licensing. The company had four of the top five toy franchises in the first quarter, including Disney Princess, Mickey & Friends and Star Wars. The lone non-Disney franchise was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, owned by Viacom Inc.

“Cars,” another Disney property, led the list last year, when retail sales of from licensed toys climbed to $5.3 billion, according to Port Washington, New York-based NPD. The toy industry is increasingly relying on entertainment franchises to spur sales. While total U.S. toy sales declined 1 percent last year, revenue from licenses rose 3 percent.

Disney, based in Burbank, California, also dominated the list of fastest-growing licenses last quarter with three titles: “Frozen,” “Planes” and “Sofia the First.” The top spot went to toys based on “Despicable Me,” owned by Comcast Corp.’s Universal Pictures.

Mattel Inc. (MAT), the world’s biggest toymaker, has licenses for “Frozen,” Disney Princess, “Cars” and “Planes.” Hasbro Inc. (HAS) has a deal with Star Wars. Playmates Toys Ltd., meanwhile, makes toys for Ninja Turtles.

And the Most Popular Disney Princess Is…
Surprise! A princess who doesn't end up with a prince at the end

In the wonderful (capitalist) world of Disney, the best way to determine a princess’s popularity is by measuring how much money she makes. Here’s how the Disney princesses rank in terms of the amount they’ve earned on eBay since May 2013, according to sellers’ analytic tool Terapeak as reported by Jezebel:

1. Elsa (Frozen): $3,397,816

2. Cinderella (Cinderella): $2,504,259

3. Snow White (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs): $2,301,831

4. Anna (Frozen): $2,165,120

5. Ariel (The Little Mermaid): $1,483,384

6. Rapunzel (Tangled): $598,056

7. Aurora (Sleeping Beauty): $215,856

8. Merida (Brave): $282,188

9. Jasmine (Aladdin): $253,102

10. Tiana (The Princess and the Frog): $84,882

11. Belle (Beauty and the Beast): $6,867

It’s really no surprise that this year Elsa from Frozen is rolling in dough. Frozen became the No. 1 animated film of all time March. The movie has topped $400 million at the domestic box office and $1 billion total.

Frozen toys were sold out everywhere at the beginning of March — four and a half months after the movie’s release. Limited-edition Anna and Elsa dolls go for as much as $1,750 on eBay, and even the regular dolls were sold for hundreds of dollars (even though they retail at about $30 per doll), according to Jezebel.

What is surprising is that the top-selling doll is one who doesn’t end up with a prince at the end. Now that’s progress. In fact, Elsa and Merida are the only dolls even on the list who don’t have a love story.

But despite that victory, we still have a long way to go in our doll-purchasing habits. The blonde doll from Frozen unsurprisingly but sadly surpassed the brunette one. And the non-white princesses, Jasmine and Tiana, sat at the bottom of the list. (We’ll assume that Mulan didn’t make the cut because she’s not technically a princess, though she is a total badass.) Jasmine and Tiana only beat out Belle, the bookworm princess (who coincidentally was my favorite growing up as a bookworm myself).

'Frozen' Still No. 1 On Billboard 200; Future Debuts At No. 2

Disney's soundtrack to "Frozen" continues to chill for a 12th week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, while the latest albums from Iggy Azalea and Future arrive in the top three.

"Frozen" sold another 115,000 copies in the week ending April 27, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That's down 56 percent from a week ago, when it hit a weekly high of 259,000.

"Frozen" is just the eighth album to have spent at least 12 weeks at No. 1 since SoundScan started tracking sales in 1991. Since the Billboard 200 began publishing on a regular weekly basis in 1956, "Frozen" is one of 14 soundtracks to have earned at least 12 weeks at the top.

With the additional 115,000 Frozen sold in the week ending April 27, its total sales rise to 2.5 million. Further, the album becomes the first to reach 2 million in sales in 2014, as its sales this year climb to 2.1 million. ("Frozen" was released in November of 2013, and sold 338,000 last year.)

Last year, it took nearly six months for the industry to notch its first 2 million seller: Justin Timberlake's "The 20/20 Experience," which crossed the threshold in the week ending June 23.

"Frozen" remains the only album to have sold 1 million copies so far in 2014. The year's second-biggest seller is Beyonce's self-titled set, with 648,000.

One more fun "Frozen" fact: The album accounts for 2.6 percent of all albums sold this year and 5.4 percent of all current (non-catalog) albums.

Idina Menzel's "Let It Go" is No. 4 (133,000; down 16 percent)

Meanwhile, the soundtrack to "Frozen" will likely nab a lucky 13th week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. While it's too early to tell how many copies it could sell in the week ending May 4, sources suggest it should still be ahead of Stirling's "Shatter Me."

'Frozen' Soundtrack Heading Toward 13th Week at No. 1 on Billboard 200
"Frozen" seems likely to spend a 13th week at No. 1, while Lindsey Stirling aims for No. 2

Disney's "Frozen" soundtrack, which has racked up 12 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, seems likely to spend a 13th week at No. 1 on the tally. The album could sell another 90,000 to 100,000 copies in the tracking week ending May 4, industry forecasters suggest.

That should greatly outpace the likely No. 2 set, the debuting "Shatter Me" from classical crossover violinist Lindsey Stirling. The independently distributed album could start with between 50,000 and 60,000 copies.

The top 10 positions of the new Billboard 200 chart will be revealed on May 7.

If "Frozen" logs another week at No. 1, it will become one of only 39 albums in the history of the chart to have earned at least 13 weeks at the top. (The Billboard 200 became a regularly published weekly chart in 1956.)

Around-the-World Roundup

Frozen continued its fantastic run in Japan, where it added $11.1 million in its eighth weekend in theaters. Remarkably, that's the movie's top weekend so far there. To date, it has grossed $143.2 million in Japan, and should continue to put up strong numbers for weeks to come. On a worldwide basis it reached $1.17 billion, and is now around $46 million away from topping Iron Man 3.

Oh My Disney

UPDATE: Intl Box Office: ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2′ Snares $116M In Overseas Web, Sets China Record; ‘Rio 2′ Nears $300M; ‘Other Woman’ Shows Legs; More

Even with strong local movies in the market, Frozen is still running hot in Japan where it held the No. 1 spot at the box office for the 8th consecutive weekend. The past frame was part of the local Golden Week holiday period which helped goose the box office, and Frozen’s estimated $11.1M for the weekend is the biggest session for the film since it was released in Japan on March 14. Its local cume is $143.2M, pushing it past Armageddon to become Disney’s biggest release ever in Japan. In other milestones, it’s now the No. 5 Western release of all-time — live action or animation — in Japan, and the No. 10 all-time industry release there.

Disney Will Continue To Reap Benefits From Frozen In Fiscal Q2

Disney will report its Q2 earnings for fiscal 2014 on May 6. We expect Disney to report higher earnings driven by its movie business. Disney will see continued benefits from Frozen, released late last year, and the success of its Marvel movie, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, released in the first quarter this year.

Disney Will Benefit From Frozen And Captain America

Disney Studios contribute close to 9% to the company’s value, according to our estimates. Disney saw a fantastic March quarter and topped the U.S. box-office (16.4% market share) with grossing of over $520 million during the period. The studio likely benefited from the continued success of Frozen, which is now the highest-grossing animation movie ever made. The movie cost a modest $150 million to produce and has grossed more than $1.17 billion at the global box-office. Frozen related merchandise is also a hit for Disney’s retail business. Disney Stores are unable to meet the demand for Frozen merchandise and has restricted customers to buy a maximum of two items per order. Frozen merchandise sold better than any other licensed toy in the first quarter of 2014. Stores across the U.S. are sold out on Frozen costumes, and originals are being offered for as much as $1,600 on eBay. It is clear that there is a huge demand for the merchandise and Disney Consumer Products would have benefited from the same in the first quarter.
