'Frozen' Tops $50 Million in Japan
The Oscar-winner is Hollywood's first major hit in 2014 for Japan, where it won the local box office for the third consecutive weekend.

TOKYO -- Frozen topped the Japanese box office for the third consecutive weekend, taking another $8.52 million (¥879 million) on Saturday and Sunday, to bring its total to $51.2 million (¥5.29 billion) after 17 days.

Released locally as Anna to Yuki no Jou (Anna and the Snow Queen), the film looks set for a big final total in Japan after its latest weekend take topped the weekend prior, which outdid its record bow for a Disney animation in Japan. The family-friendly flick is getting a boost with most Japanese schools currently on spring break, though it is attracting audiences from a wide age range, according to Disney Studios Japan.

A third strong weekend in a row in Japan helped push Frozen past Toy Story 3 to become the highest grossing animated film ever, with $1.06 billion globally.

“We have a breakout character in Olaf. The animation of this guy is hilarious. One of the funniest songs I’ve ever heard is where Olaf, who’s always so positive, sings about summer. It’s wonderfully naive. It’s the perfect blend of a great voice and writing that comes from the personality of the character.” -John Lasseter

'Frozen' Rules With Most Weeks At No. 1 Since Adele's '21'
The hit soundtrack spends an eight week atop the Billboard 200; Plus, new releases from Shakira and Johnny Cash round out the top three

As forecast last week, the soundtrack to Disney's "Frozen" scores an eighth week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, marking the longest run atop the list since Adele's "21" closed out a 24-week run at No. 1 in 2012.

"Frozen" sold another 161,000 copies in the week ending March 30, according to Nielsen SoundScan — down 20 percent compared with the week previous.

Since SoundScan — and its point-of-sale data — began powering the Billboard 200 in 1991, "Frozen" is just the 20th album to spend at least eight weeks at No. 1. In that span of time, "21" has ruled the longest, followed by Whitney Houston's "The Bodyguard" soundtrack (with 20 weeks at No. 1) and Garth Brooks' "Ropin' the Wind" (with 18).

Adele's mega-selling "21" (10.9 million and counting) spent its first week at No. 1 on the chart dated March 12, 2011, and its 24th week in the penthouse over a year later, on June 23, 2012.

"Frozen" has now sold 1.8 million copies, with 1.5 million of those sold in 2014. It's by far the biggest-selling album of this year.

Idina Menzel's "Let It Go" continues to rise, up one spot to No. 3 (164,000; down 2 percent).

Given that Disney US can clearly claim some/total ownership of the multi-language soundtracks, I wonder they outright own the multi-language dubs themselves? I was thoroughly disappointed that Mulan didn't include the... Mandarin(?) soundtrack featuring Jackie Chan - despite including Chan's music video! Which is why I wondered if the "local" tracks are produced locally... but the article above implies it IS in fact centralised and overseen by America.

So: anyone want to start a letter writing campaign to get ALL the languages added as optional soundtracks to the inevitable Super Edition (in October?)..?! How great would it be to be able to switch between all the languages and hear all the different takes on familiar characters..?

(I notice that they also said there that they tweak the lip sync for alternate soundtracks. Impressive..)

‘Frozen’ Beats ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ to Remain at Top of Home Video Sales Charts

Walt Disney Studios’ “Frozen” remained at No. 1 on both national home video sales charts for the second consecutive week, despite the release of three high-profile newcomers.

Paramount’s “The Wolf of Wall Street,” the acclaimed Martin Scorsese drama about corruption and excess in the world of finance, fared best out of the three, debuting at No. 2 on both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks overall disc sales, DVD and Blu-ray Disc combined, and Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart.

But even then, “Frozen” in its second week of availability still outsold “Wolf” by a margin of more than 3 to 1 during the week ending March 30, Nielsen data shows.

The two other new releases that arrived in stores the same day as “Wolf” didn’t generate nearly the buzz, nor the box office, of Scorsese’s latest.

“Walking with Dinosaurs: The Movie,” from 20th Century Fox, debuted at No. 3 on both sales charts, while “Delivery Man,” from Walt Disney Studios, bowed at No. 4 on First Alert and No. 5 on the Blu-ray Disc chart (behind Lionsgate’s “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.” No. 5 on the overall sales chart).

“Walking with Dinosaurs” is an animated kidvid based on the 1999 BBC documentary of the same name. It got mostly negative reviews and earned a modest $36.1 million in U.S. theaters.

“Delivery Man,” the latest Vince Vaughn comedy, earned a domestic gross of $30.7 million. Vaughn plays a likeable slacker who’s fathered 533 children through anonymous donations to a fertility clinic 20 years ago, 142 of whom have now filed a lawsuit requesting he come forward.

Like “Walking with Dinosaurs,” “Delivery Man” is a remake, of a 2011 French-Canadian film, “Starbuck.” And, again like “Walking with Dinosaurs,” it didn’t exactly win the hearts of critics – or take the box office by storm.

“Frozen,” in its second week in stores, generated 45% of its sales from the Blu-ray Disc version, compared to 54% for “The Wolf of Wall Street,” 35% for “Walking with Dinosaurs” and just 30% for “Delivery Man.”

On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week, “The Wolf of Wall Street” debuted at No. 2, followed at No. 2 by “Gravity,” from Warner, which came out on disc a month ago but wasn’t available at Netflix or Redbox for 28 days.

Sony Pictures’ “American Hustle,” which bowed as the No. 1 rental last week, slipped to No. 3. Rounding out the top five: “Frozen” at No. 4 (down from No. 3 the prior week) and “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” at No. 5 (down from No. 2).

“Delivery Man” debuted at No.9.

'Frozen' May Chill For Ninth Week at No. 1 on Billboard 200

The "Frozen" soundtrack may maintain its icy grip on the Billboard 200's No. 1 slot for a ninth week, so say industry forecasters.

Forecasters suggest the Disney film soundtrack could sell another 140,000 to 145,000 copies in the week ending April 6. That may be enough to block the likely highest debut: 5 Seconds of Summer's EP "She Looks So Perfect."

The top 10 of the new Billboard 200 chart will be revealed on Wednesday, April 9.

Since Nielsen SoundScan's point-of-sale data began powering the Billboard 200 chart in May of 1991, only 12 albums have spent at least nine weeks at No. 1.

On SoundScan's Building chart (below), 5 Seconds of Summer is No. 1, followed by "Frozen" at No. 2. The Building tally is a precursor to the final Billboard 200 ranking -- reflecting the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week as reported by six major merchants.

Around-The-World Roundup

Disney Animation's Frozen has now earned $1.097 billion worldwide. Sometime last week, it passed The Dark Knight Rises to move up to ninth place all-time.

The movie continues to do phenomenal business in Japan, where it's banked $75.1 million total and held first place for four-straight weekends. Assuming it continues to hold well there, Frozen should eventually move up to sixth on the all-time chart ahead of Transformers: Dark of the Moon ($1.124 billion).

Stitch Kingdom reports that next week will see an MP3 release of "LET IT GO" - THE COMPLETE SET... fifty international versions of the main song.

Put it on CD - even limited CD - and I'm there. Download only... not keen.

5 Seconds Of Summer Debuts At No. 2 on Billboard 200; 'Frozen' Still No. 1

Disney's soundtrack to "Frozen" refuses to budge from the No. 1 slot on the Billboard 200. The set spends a ninth nonconsecutive week atop the list, having sold 149,000 copies in the week ending April 6 (down 8 percent), according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The album is one week away from tying Disney's "The Lion King" for the longest run at No. 1 by an animated film soundtrack. "The Lion King" roared for 10 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 in 1994 and 1995.

"Frozen" has now sold 1.9 million copies. It has been among the top three best-selling albums every week for the past 14 consecutive weeks.

A little behind "Frozen" on the latest Billboard 200 is Australian pop/rock band 5 Seconds of Summer, debuting at No. 2 with its EP "She Looks So Perfect." The set, released by Capitol Records, sold 143,000 copies, with downloads comprising 75% of its first-week sales.

Idina Menzel's "Let It Go" descends 3-4 (154,000; down 6 percent)
