Disney Flies Past Expectations With Q2 Earnings On Continued Success Of 'Frozen'

Shares of the Walt Disney Company are taking the advice of one of its smash hit songs and letting go: that is, letting go of losses from Tuesday’s regular trading session. The stock is rallying in after-hours trading Tuesday afternoon after a surprisingly strong second quarter earnings report revealed profit and revenue that were well above the Street’s expectations.

Disney reported $11.6 billion in second quarter revenue, beating the analyst consensus of $11.2 billion and marking a 10% increase over the $10.6 billion reported as revenue for the prior-year period. Net income came in at $1.9 billion, up 27% over the same time in 2013, resulting in earnings of $1.08 per share. Excluding special items — like a $143 million foreign exchange loss in Venezuela as well as miscellaneous restructuring charges — Disney’s net income came in at $2.06 billion, or $1.11 per share. This easily beats the Street estimate, which was calling for earnings of 96 cents per share.

Disney’s parks and resorts revenue increased 8% to $3.6 billion thanks to increased guest spending at Walt Disney World (in Florida), higher attendance in Disneyland (in California) and increased occupied room nights at both resorts. The company’s consumer products segment netted $885 million in revenue, a 16% year-over-year increase, thanks to increases in merchandise licensing for Disney Channel, Mickey and Minnie, and Planes products.

The segment with the largest boost in revenue was Disney’s studio entertainment business, which reaped $1.8 billion during the quarter — a whopping 35% increase — as mega-hit Frozen continued to rake in the dough. The Idina Menzel/Kristen Bell-helmed film boosted Disney’s at-home entertainment sales (that is, DVD sales) as well as theatrical revenue abroad. Though Disney did not discloses the at-home or abroad sales as a result of Frozen, the company said that the results compare favorably to the at-home sales for Wreck-It-Ralph and international theatrical sales for Wreck-It-Ralph and Oz The Great And Powerful during the same time last year.

'Frozen' Spends Lucky 13th Week At No. 1, Lindsey Stirling Bows At No. 2

As expected, Disney's soundtrack to "Frozen" refuses to budge from the No. 1 slot on the Billboard 200. The set spends a lucky 13th nonconsecutive week at No. 1, selling 106,000 copies (down 8 percent) in the week ending May 4, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

"Frozen" is now one of only 39 albums in the history of the chart to have spent at least 13 weeks at No. 1. (The Billboard 200 became a regularly published weekly list in 1956.)

Only five albums have racked exactly 13 weeks at No. 1. In addition to "Frozen," they are: the original Broadway cast recording of "Hair" (in 1969), the Monkees' self-titled debut (1966), Judy Garland's "Judy at Carnegie Hall" (1961) and Enoch Light/Terry Snyder and the All-Stars' "Persuasive Percussion" (1960).

"Frozen" also logs its 10th nonconsecutive week of sales exceeding 100,000 copies. The last album to tally as many weeks of 100,000-plus sales was Taylor Swift's "Red." Its first 10 weeks all logged sales of more than 100,000, through the week ending Dec. 30, 2012.

Cumulative sales for “Frozen” now stand at 2.6 million, of which 2.2 million have been sold in 2014.

Idina Menzel's "Let It Go" falls 4-9 with 91,000 (down 32 percent)

Japan Box Office: 'Frozen' Passes $150 Million, Enters All-Time Top 10
The Disney Oscar-winner has been No. 1 for over two months while "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" closed in on $20 million and BBC Earth's "Enchanted Kingdom 3D" got off to a strong start during a local holiday period.

TOKYO – Frozen remains untouchable at the Japanese box office, surpassing $156 million (¥15.9 billion) over the Golden Week holidays, and overtaking Avatar and Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo on a Cliff to enter the all-time top 10 highest grossing films in the territory.

Golden Week -- a bunch of public holidays grouped together that ended Tuesday -- is usually a bumper box-office period, and Walt Disney Studios Japan timed the release of the 3D Japanese-language version of Frozen to coincide with it. The soundtrack album also has held the No. 1 spot on the local charts for the last two weeks after spending two months in the top 10.

‘Frozen’ Makes It 9 Weeks at No. 1 at Box Office in Japan
The Disney Animation blockbuster is up to $400 million domestically and $790 million from overseas

Disney's family film “Frozen” continued its stunning hold in Japan, capturing the top spot at the box office there for the ninth consecutive week.

The Disney Animation blockbuster dropped just 36 percent from last week and upped its total gross from that country to $164 million. It's Disney's biggest release ever in Japan, live action or animated.

In the process, “Frozen” moved with $25 million of “Iron Man 3” on the list of all-time earners at the worldwide box office with $1.19 billion, behind the $1.21 billion run up by Disney's Marvel superhero sequel in 2013.

Only “Avatar,” “Titanic,” “Marvel's The Avengers” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2” are ahead them, according to Box Office Mojo.

“Frozen” has taken in more than $400 million domestically since opening at Thanksgiving last fall, and brought in another $790 million from overseas.

Very quick turnaround, I hear that Elsa was in the finale of Once Upon a Time tonight... deliberately seen from behind so they can re-cast/draft Ms Menzel should they wish..! What chance now of Ms Bell turning up next year, I wonder..

Seeing as OUAT's storyline strays so far from tradition. I doubt they will bring in Anna anytime soon. But the episode led you to believe that the character that strongly resembles Elsa (they rarely keep names from stories your accustomed to) is an evil sorceress wielding dark magic too strong for even the most evil of characters.
