'Frozen' Tops $50 Million in Japan
The Oscar-winner is Hollywood's first major hit in 2014 for Japan, where it won the local box office for the third consecutive weekend.
TOKYO -- Frozen topped the Japanese box office for the third consecutive weekend, taking another $8.52 million (¥879 million) on Saturday and Sunday, to bring its total to $51.2 million (¥5.29 billion) after 17 days.
Released locally as Anna to Yuki no Jou (Anna and the Snow Queen), the film looks set for a big final total in Japan after its latest weekend take topped the weekend prior, which outdid its record bow for a Disney animation in Japan. The family-friendly flick is getting a boost with most Japanese schools currently on spring break, though it is attracting audiences from a wide age range, according to Disney Studios Japan.
A third strong weekend in a row in Japan helped push Frozen past Toy Story 3 to become the highest grossing animated film ever, with $1.06 billion globally.
