Around-the-World Roundup

Frozen hit what's likely to be its final milestone this weekend. The movie held first place in Japan for the sixth-straight weekend, and has now earned an incredible $104.1 million there. In the process, it passed The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and Transformers: Dark of the Moon to move up to sixth place on the all-time worldwide chart. It's also now the highest-grossing animated movie overseas with $729.3 million.

‘Frozen’ Is Highest Animated Int’l Grosser Of All Time As Disney Reaches $1B In Record Pace

Based on the phenomenal grosses from Frozen and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Disney (which crossed $1BM worldwide earlier this month) now can boast that it crossed $1B internationally in record time. Frozen has just surpassed Ice Age 4 to become the worldwide leader as the highest-grossing animated film of all time in international markets with a total tally of $729.3M. In comparison, Ice Age: Continental Drift grossed $715.9M in 2012. In addition, Frozen is hovering at $400M domestically and should reach that watermark next weekend. It just skated across the $100M in Japan while Captain America 2 opened there as its final territory in its international run. Disney boasts the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in the country now with Frozen leading the way.

So far this year, the studio also commands the top two positions internationally of all films in the marketplace … Frozen is No. 1 with $462M and Captain America is $385.1M for the second spot. To show the dominance internationally, the No. three movie – The Wolf of Wall Street — is $122.6M behind the Cap.

Frozen has also become the No. 6-highest grosser of all time with $1.129B, besting Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King ($1.114B) and Transformers: Dark Side Of The Moon ($1.123B). It’s highest-grossing territory is by far Japan, where it has grossed $104.1M to date.

Even ‘Captain America’ Can't Stop ‘Frozen’ at Japan's Box Office
In its sixth week, Disney's animated blockbuster tops the opening of the superhero sequel and moves to No. 6 on all-time list

Even “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” couldn't thaw the grip of Disney's blockbuster “Frozen” in Japan.

Disney Animation's musical tale of sisters Anna and Elsa stayed on top for the sixth week in a row there with $7.5 million — topping the $2 million that the studio's Marvel superhero sequel opened with this weekend in Japan.

The country is the final, and has been by far the biggest, overseas market for “Frozen.” It's brought in more than $104 million there, ahead of the $76.9 million the film grossed in Korea.

“Frozen” is a phenomenon in Japan. Its drop this weekend was only 9 percent from last weekend's and it's played to almost the same numbers for its entire six-week run there.

Globally, “Frozen” hit $1.12 billion in grosses this weekend, making it the sixth-highest grossing movie of all time, passing “Lord of the Rings: Return of the King” ($1.11 billion) and “Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon” ($1.2 billion).

It's also become the highest-grossing international animated release of all time, passing “Ice Age 4.” In all, “Frozen” has brought in more than $729 million from overseas and nearly $400 million domestically.

WonderCon: FROZEN – “The Art of the Story” Panel Recap; Learn How the Film Changed During Production

It’s no surprise when a Disney film is met with critical and commercial success, but after winning an Academy Award and the title of highest grossing animated picture of all time, it’s safe to say that Frozen is impressive even by Disney’s high standards. Storyboard artists Jeff Ranjo (Frozen, Surf’s Up, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs), Fawn Veerasunthorn (Frozen, Hop, El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera), Nicole Mitchell (Frozen, Wreck-it Ralph, Winnie the Pooh) and Normand Lemay (Frozen, Rio) were on hand at WonderCon today to give a behind-the-scenes look at the art of storyboarding and the process of crafting story for an animated film.

'Frozen' Soundtrack Set For Biggest Week Yet Thanks to Easter

Thanks to Easter-fueled shopping, the "Frozen" soundtrack is on course for its biggest sales week yet.

Industry sources forecast the album to sell between 225,000 to 250,000 copies in the week ending April 20, Easter Sunday. That would easily surpass the album's best frame (202,000), logged the week ending March 23, when the movie was released on DVD and blu-ray.

"Frozen" should easily earn an 11th week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart -- the top 10 of which will be revealed on Wednesday, April 23.

The album, which was released last November, has sold 2.1 million copies in the U.S. according to Nielsen SoundScan. It is by far the biggest-selling album of 2014. So far this year, it has sold 1.74 million -- 1.11 million more than the second-biggest album of 2014, Beyonce's eponymous release, which sold 628,000.

Also helping "Frozen's" sales this week: The album is now being stocked at Starbucks stores. The coffee giant started carrying the album on April 15, though some stores began selling it a day or two earlier.

"Frozen" has little competition on next week's Billboard 200 chart, as it could sell between 160,000 and 190,000 more than the likely runner-up title -- August Alsina's new "Testimony." The singer's debut set will perhaps bow at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

On SoundScan's Building chart (below), "Frozen" is No. 1, followed by Alsina, NEEDTOBREATHE, Michaelson and Derulo at Nos. 2-5, respectively. The Building tally is a precursor to the final Billboard 200 ranking -- reflecting the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week as reported by six major merchants.

“Back in the old days on paper, you could get away with fewer sketches. When you’re doing it digitally, everything has to be up on the screen. You put more poses in to make it more like an animatic. It has to play on the screen, it has to move, and it has to cut well.” -Jeff Ranjo, Frozen story artist

Disney Store promises more “Frozen” merchandise, mall experience to continue kid focus sending adults online

Image

Since its inception in 1987, Disney Store has gone through many changes, even leaving Disney’s own hands for a time in the early 2000s. Its latest incarnation, dubbed internally as “Imagination Park” stores, have been successful in bringing the Disney experience back to malls since 2010 when the first of its kind opened.

These stores have found success, guiding their visitors down a sparkly, winding pathway through different retail zones, drawing every customer’s attention to a “sweet spot” in the bend about halfway into the store. That’s where Disney features their hottest merchandise. Right now, the hottest property is “Frozen.”

But “Frozen” merchandise has been extremely hard to come by since the phenomenon of a film slid into theaters in November 2013. Disney had high expectations for the film, noted Jonathan Storey, Disney Store Vice President. But demand went even higher than they thought it ever would, selling out “Frozen” products everywhere. They’ve been racing to keep up.

Storey says more “Frozen” merchandise is on the way to Disney Store locations immediately. As soon as tomorrow, regular shipments should begin to arrive, replenishing the stock. New “Frozen” products are also being developed to be released throughout this year, particularly new toys when Christmas season rolls around.

“Frozen” fans hoping for Disney Princess branded merchandise to feature Anna or Elsa soon shouldn’t hold their breath. Disney Store says there are no current plans to hold a coronation for either, though it’s possible some time down the line. They have to figure out exactly how the two would fit alongside Ariel, Aurora, Belle, and the rest of the Princesses. After all, Elsa spends most of her time in “Frozen” as a queen, not a princess.

In the meantime, that “sweet spot” of every Disney Store will be filled with more “Frozen” merchandise, along with whatever is the hot property at the time. Right now it’s “The Little Mermaid” as summer approaches, but soon it will be “Maleficent.” There’s also a new exclusive line of “Star Wars” merchandise on the way. (More on that very soon.)

'Frozen' Scores Biggest Sales Week Yet, No. 1 For An 11th Week

The soundtrack to Disney's "Frozen," fueled by Easter shopping, earns its biggest sales week yet and 11th week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

The album sold 259,000 copies in the week ending April 20, according to Nielsen SoundScan. (The Easter holiday was April 20.) That's up 94% compared with the previous week, when the album shifted 133,000 at No. 1. This is also the fifth consecutive week that frozen sold more than 100,000 copies. To date, "Frozen" has sold 2.3 million copies.

As the weeks tick by, "Frozen" continues to rack up impressive chart feats. Since SoundScan's point-of-sale data began powering the Billboard 200's rankings on May 25, 1991, "Frozen" is just the ninth album — and third soundtrack — to spend at least 11 weeks at No. 1.

Going back even farther: Since the Billboard 200 started publishing on a regular, weekly basis in 1956, "Frozen" is one of only 15 soundtracks to spend at least 11 weeks at No. 1.

"Frozen" also surpasses "The Lion King" (with 10 weeks at No. 1) as the longest-running No. 1 soundtrack by an animated film.

Sales for "Frozen" in the week ending April 20 were powered by Easter shopping, which tends to lift sales of music that appeals to families and children. Thus, there are a number of titles on thechart that reap the benefits of Easter-related purchases. One Direction's "Midnight Memories," for example, climbs 55-38 (9,000; up 68 percent), and the child-friendly "Kidz Bop 25" album rises 42-20 (15,000 — up 126 percent).

Speaking of One Direction, "Frozen" is the first album since "Midnight Memories" to score five straight weeks of sales that exceed 100,000. The first five sales frames for "Midnight Memories" all surpassed that threshold, ending with the week ending Dec. 29.

But, what makes "Frozen" stand apart from "Midnight Memories" — and most other No. 1 albums, for that matter — is that the soundtrack has achieved such a hot sales streak so long after its release. The album was released on Nov. 26, 2013, and sold 44,000 copies in its first week (ending Dec. 1). It didn't begin its current five-in-a-row streak of 100,000-plus sales frames until the week ending March 23.

"Frozen" is over 190,000 copies ahead of the No. 2 set this week, the debuting "Testimony" from August Alsina. It's the singer's first album, which also starts at No. 1 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.

The "Frozen" party continues outside the top 10, as "Disney's Karaoke Series: Frozen" debuts at No. 17 with 15,000 sold. The set tallies the largest sales week for a karaoke album in a little over six years. The last time a karaoke title sold more was in theweek ending Dec. 23, 2007, when two more “Disney Karaoke Series” sets shifted a larger amount. That week, the companion karaoke albums to "Hannah Montana" and "High School Musical 2" sold 22,000 and 16,000, respectively.

Idina Menzel's "Let It Go" at No. 4 (158,000; up 4 percent).

Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez

They told the world to "Let It Go"

As soon as Bobby and Kristen told us that they were working on the songs for Frozen and what the movie was about, we knew it was a perfect fit. They are both completely steeped in the traditions of Broadway musicals, but they’re really smart and would never be happy just regurgitating what’s come before. And while we know they write for themselves and their peers, they also have two little girls who they definitely had in mind.

Matt has a 3-year-old daughter who is obsessed with Frozen, and he hears the song “Let It Go” about 50 times a day. It’s like some of Bobby and Kristen’s musical DNA is going right into her — and little kids around the world.

They really hit it with “Let It Go,” which won the Oscar for Best Original Song. It’s a perfect example of everything we tried to do on Team America and South Park — and with Bobby on Book of Mormon. It’s catchy and familiar and yet new. It’s that perfect mix where a songwriter can get a song you’ve never heard before stuck in your head in 30 seconds. We couldn’t be happier for them, but maybe just a little more happy for Kristen.
