'Frozen' Aiming for 10th Week Atop Billboard 200

Disney's "Frozen" movie soundtrack is about to enter rare air on the Billboard 200 chart.

The hit soundtrack, which has spent nine nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, is heading for a 10th week atop the list -- so suggest industry forecasters.

Since Nielsen SoundScan's point-of-sale data began powering the Billboard 200 chart's rankings on May 25, 1991, only 10 albums have spent at least 10 weeks at No. 1. The last to do so was Adele's "21," which ruled for 24 nonconsecutive weeks in 2011 and 2012.

(In the 58-year history of the Billboard 200, a total of 69 albums have spent 10 or more weeks at No. 1.)

While it's too early to tell just how many copies "Frozen" will sell in the week ending Sunday, April 13, those in the know say it will be miles ahead of all other titles on the chart.

In the most recent tracking frame, which ended on April 6, the album sold 149,000 copies in its ninth week at No. 1. It would seem likely for the set to sell more than 100,000 in the week ending April 13.

The new Billboard 200's top 10 will be revealed on Wednesday, April 16.

The last soundtrack to spend at least 10 weeks at No. 1 was "Titanic," which sailed atop the list for 16 straight weeks in 1998. If "Frozen" chills for a 10th week at No. 1, it will tie Disney's "The Lion King" as the longest-running No. 1 animated film soundtrack. "The Lion King" roared at No. 1 for 10 nonconsecutive weeks in 1994 and 1995.

Around-the-World Roundup

This weekend, Frozen passed Skyfall to move up to eighth place on the all-time worldwide chart with $1.11 billion. It's now held first place for five-straight weeks in Japan, which is now its top market with an incredible $89 million.

'Frozen' Heading Toward $100 Million at Japan Box Office
Japan overtakes South Korea as the Oscar-winning animation's second biggest market behind the U.S.

TOKYO -- Frozen stayed on top of the Japanese box office for the fifth consecutive weekend, pushing its total to $91.2 million (¥9.28 billion), as the country overtook Korea as the biggest overseas territory for Disney's Oscar winner.

The end of spring break last week had little effect on Frozen's stellar performance in Japan, with takings falling only 1.2 percent on the previous weekend to $8.26 million (¥840 million) on Saturday and Sunday.

A Japanese dubbed 3D version will be released on April 26, in time for the national Golden Week holidays, which should help it maintain momentum at the box office. Audiences in Japan currently have to choose between a 2D dubbed or 3D subtitled version.

Frozen has been a huge hit across Asia. It previously took a record $77 million in Korea, helping to push its global total to $1.113 billion and overtake Skyfall to become the eighth-highest grossing movie of all time. It has also become the number one animated film ever.

While its Japan total looks certain to finish well north of $100 million, its performance in Korea was more remarkable given that its population is around a third of Japan's.

The unstoppable soundtrack to Disney's "Frozen" continues its run atop the Billboard 200 as it clocks a 10th nonconsecutive week at No. 1. The set sold 133,000 copies in the week ending April 13, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That's down 11 percent compared with the previous frame, when it sold 149,000 at No. 1.

The album’s cumulative sales also climb past the 2 million mark, as its additional 133,000 copies bring its to-date sum to 2.1 million.

"Frozen" is now one of just 11 albums to have spent at least 10 weeks at No. 1 since the chart started using SoundScan's point-of-sale data on May 25, 1991. Four of those 11 albums also happen to be soundtracks: “Frozen,” Whitney Houston's "The Bodyguard" (20 weeks at No. 1), "Titanic" (16 weeks) and "The Lion King" (10 weeks).

In addition, "Frozen" now ties "The Lion King" for the most weeks at No. 1 for an animated film soundtrack.

'Frozen' Spends 10th Week at No. 1 On Billboard 200; Sales Climb Past 2 Million

As previously reported, "Frozen" has spent more weeks at No. 1 than any album since Adele's "21" racked up 24 nonconsecutive weeks in the penthouse in 2011 and 2012. It spent its 24th and final week at No. 1 on the chart dated June 23, 2012.

Idina Menzel's "Let It Go" is No. 4 (152,000; down 2 percent).

No Stopping 'Frozen' Album as 11th Week at No. 1 Seems Likely

Disney's "Frozen" soundtrack is heading for an 11th week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, so suggest industry forecasters.

While it's too early to tell just how many copies the hit album will sell in the week ending April 20, it should be a very handsome figure. The number will be amplified by the Easter holiday on April 20, as parents and families purchase gifts suitable for Easter baskets and the like.

Also helping matters is how the "Frozen" album is now stocked at Starbucks stores. It reached the retailer officially on April 15, though some stores may have got it earlier.

The one-two punch of Easter and Starbucks should push a big gain for the album, which sold 133,000 copies in the week ending April 13, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The album's biggest week yet was logged the week ending March 23, when it scanned 202,000 copies. Its sales were bolstered that week by the home video release of the film on DVD and blu-ray.

If "Frozen" spends an 11th week at No. 1, it will become the longest-running No. 1 animated film soundtrack, surpassing the 10-week run of "The Lion King."

The new Billboard 200's top 10 will be revealed on Wednesday, April 23.

In other "Frozen" news: the karaoke version of the soundtrack -- as part of the Disney Karaoke series -- was released on April 15 as well. Sources say it could sell around 10,000 copies in the week ending April 20 -- an unusually high figure for a karaoke set. The last time a karaoke album sold more than 10,000 copies in a week was the week ending Dec. 22, 2013, when the "Tween Hits" set from the Party Tyme Karaoke series sold just over 10,000.

There are rumours and hopes that Anna and/or Elsa could wander into Once Upon a Time at some point... and vague hopes that Ms Bell would be willing/able play Anna on TV!
