^Still, after E3 this year and such, I'm sure the WiiU will be doing fine. If Nintendo wants more money they could just add DLC.

Or they can make $255 more per person if they just do this one thing… If I was Nintendo, or a Nintendo investor, I'd be all over this idea. There's really no reason NOT to do it.

Selling Wii Us is the entire reason the Americas are getting this game two weeks before anyone else in the world, to get it on U.S. shelves before Black Friday, to sell Wii Us along with copies of the game on 11/28. Nintendo doesn't want to just "make money" they have money, they want to sell Wii Us, and if offering DLC early to owners of both versions could do that, I very well see them doing that. Now to make it more fair, they could do something like, they are locked unless you have both, if you have just a Wii U version, then you don't get early access either, you must have both versions to get early access. Then put them on the eShop post-holidays as DLC, free or not, it could sell even more systems.

There's a reason to do it: So Sakurai could keep his word. I mean, if this did happen and if Smash U has a great mode(s), then I'd buy Smash U. But most 3DS owners are kids, and I know a lot of kids wouldn't be able to get a $300 system.

October 21, 2014 Update: Pic of the day. The trophies from the Xenoblade series can be found mostly in the Wii U version. Here's Melia looking the other way. - Masahiro Sakurai, Director of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U

Most 3DS owners are kids? I want to disagree with you there actually... I think most kids stick to their older DS systems. Whenere I see a 3DS in public it's with people within the range of about 16-30 years old. Here and there I see some kids with a 3DS but mostly older people. Or it's just like that here in Belgium. I'm 29 myself and prefer a 3DS over Vita and a Wii U over the other systems at the moment, it helps that I'm a Nintendo fan.

Keep his word? He is. He said "the rosters will be the same between both versions". They WILL be the same eventually, so if he does this, he's 100% keeping his word. Also, of course most kids don't have $300 lying around, but Christmas and Hanukkah are a month after the game comes out. This will make kids with 3DSs want to ask for a Wii U for Christmas/Hanukkah. Nintendo makes money. Boom!
It's a great marketing strategy, especially being right by December!

@killingraptor
I see the exact opposite. I always see kids with 3DS'. (But of course grown-ups, too.)
@randall Boggs
Fair point, but I'd still find it a little unfair even though Sakurai was just using word games.
