One correction and then a comment.
In Skylanders there is correlation to the DI play sets. Skylanders have level packs. Each object (Pirate Ship, Clock Tower, etc.) unlock a whole new level to play in the current version of the game. In sequels these items usually function as very powerful single use (per level) weapons.
Now, on to the comment. I do not get the Skylanders hate. I think it is a very entertaining game. The characters are unique and each plays completely differently. This is my biggest complaint with DI 1.0, all characters felt the same. It was cool to play as iconic characters but they all seems very blah when it comes to their move sets. Ever since the first Skylanders game each figure has several upgrade paths which make them feel like "my" character. DI 2.0 is luckily adapting this feature. The biggest flaw with Skylanders in my opinion is the end game. Once it is complete there is very little to do other than replay the same levels or battle friends in the battle arenas. That is where DI's Toy Box shines. Anyways, just my opinion, take it as you will.
